My Students
My classroom consists of enthusiastic 8 and 9 year-olds. Our school lies in a rural, high-poverty district in western Maine. Although my students are faced with many challenges, they remain energetic, inquisitive, and creative.
My students are driven by curiosity; they constantly make insightful connections about the world around us.
My goal as a teacher is to create a classroom environment that fosters a love of learning and allows my students to explore their curiosity about the world. As I gain experience as a teacher, I recognize how important it is to create a classroom space and environment that best meets the needs of my students. They need opportunities to explore, move, and create to develop as learners.
My Project
As I watch my third grade students build together, I see future engineers, scientists, mathematicians, and problem-solvers in action. These STEM materials will transform how my students create. They will allow them to have more variety and build in different ways.
Free time to build, create, and explore is valuable learning time.
I hear my students discuss which materials will provide the strongest base for a structure. I watch as they imagine how to make a structure move, or test to see how much weight a structure can hold. I love to see how they will use the same materials each morning, yet build different creations each time.
More importantly, I watch students design and build collaboratively. They problem-solve together when a theory doesn’t work. They discuss ideas in groups and work together to make their ideas happen. I love to see their excitement as they invite me to come see what they have created. These simple moments to start our day can have a big impact on a student. I see how valuable this learning time is, and I would love to provide my students with as many resources as possible to help further their discoveries.
