STEM Learning Tools to Propel Learning in Low-Income Hispanic Classroom

Help me give my students the opportunity to be innovative and creative. They will be able to build, experience cause and effect, solve problems and even code. These tools will elevate their educational experience.

My Students

As an immigrant myself, I know the difficulties faced by first generation students. I come from a low-income family who immigrated from Colombia. My parents brought us here for better opportunities. Thankfully, I was able to achieve a college education and now I work as a teacher in a low-income neighborhood.

I have a passion to provide my students with the best possible education so they too have options for their future.

Working in a low income school we are faced with challenges such as large classroom sizes, limited resources and testing pressure. By providing STEM based opportunities in the classroom it would make learning motivating and engaging. These activities would take my students learning to a level which is deeper and richer.

This type of thinking has the possibility to inspire my students to pursue a STEM based profession. Hispanics, especially hispanic women are underrepresented in STEM based professions. STEM learning has been proven to foster creativity, problem solving, resilience and team-work. All of these skills would provide my students with advantages as they continue their academic career and later their professional career. Technology and innovation are the future and I want them to be part of it.

My Project

My students have limited access to experiences and resources. They come from immigrant families that are working hard to keep food on the table and a roof over their heads. These STEM based tools will provide my students with a great variety of learning and experiential opportunities. With these tools they will have the opportunity to delve into skills that are used in architecture, computer science and engineering.

These STEM based tools will stimulate their minds and enhance their learning.

In addition they are fun and interactive, which will allow for every type of learner to benefit. This exciting opportunity has the potential to affect my students' entire experience at school. I can only provide this with your support. Thank you.
