Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students come from all backgrounds and strive to learn everything they can while in the classroom. Our school is a Title I school that has about 99% of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch. It also serves a lot of our refugee population in South Salt Lake. The diversity in our classroom is so special, as each student brings something special.
They are from all ability levels but share one thing: the drive to learn.
The passion my students have makes me so proud to be their teacher, as they encourage me to continue my own education so I can provide them with the best education they can receive. I want to share all I can with them to make sure they are proficient in their foundational skills. I do this while providing them with a safe and positive classroom atmosphere to encourage risk-taking to promote learning.
My Project
Our school works hard to provide our students with resources that will help provide the skills needed for students in the 21st century. These Lakeshore STEM learning kits will help develop these skills and also help create an interest in science that is crucial for filling the jobs of our digital future. With the STEM field being male dominated, I also want to have my female students have positive experiences to show that anyone can develop a love of science.
Children who engage in scientific activities at an early age (between birth and age 8) develop positive attitudes toward science.
My students will be able to use these materials during our STEM center time and have inquiry-based experiences that will help develop their problem-solving skills, while also having trial and error to develop persistence. With reading and math being pushed hard in early graders, science has been harder integrate in with enriching activities. These supplies will help create that drive and love for science!
