My students need materials, magnets and Magformers, to allow for innovation, problem solving, and creativity on a daily basis through the use of a classroom STEM lab.
I spend my day teaching two different third-grade math and science classes, and among these 44 students, I teach students with a wide variety of personalities, learning styles, and ethnic backgrounds.
My students are hardworking, enthusiastic, and incredibly diverse, and I'm honored to be their teacher!
More than 50% of our families are economically disadvantaged, and our school is in a rural area. My learners range from students with learning disabilities to gifted and talented students. Every child is unique, but every child has the same desire to succeed!
My Project
STEM has become a buzz word in the education world, and it has transformed my teaching over the past two years. STEM activities have offered my students opportunities to become mini engineers by constructing mini Mayflowers, building marshmallow towers, and more! During these activities, students learn so much more than just the intended state standards. They learn to collaborate. They learn to problem solve. They learn to utilize various resources. They learn to keep trying after a failed attempt. Perhaps my favorite, they learn to love the feeling of pride after working through a challenge.
The students' huge grins as they collaborate to overcome obstacles and successfully complete a STEM challenge are almost as big as my smile as I watch their excitement for learning!
This year, I am adding a STEM lab to my classroom, which will allow students more time and more freedom to explore science, technology, engineering, and math on a regular basis. This lab will offer a variety of challenges and ideas with an array of materials to explore. The addition of the STEM lab will help further excite students about learning while providing an opportunity to let their minds soar!
