Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I work with students who are English language learners and have learning disabilities. They also come from families who struggle with paying bills and affording school supplies and books. Despite these challenges, my students bring many strengths to the classroom, including a passion for learning and a willingness to take risks as they acquire the building blocks of reading.
My students love math, science, computers, and art, and they love learning how things work.
They are curious about the world and are eager to improve their literacy skills.
My Project
These hands-on Makey Makey STEM Lab kits will introduce my students to coding, programming, and engineering in a fun way. Students will be able to connect everyday objects like bell peppers and bananas to a computer to make their own touchpad! They will be able to draw their own game controller and build their own sensor with foil, pennies, and paper clips. These engaging labs will foster critical thinking and problem solving, skills that my sixth graders will need throughout their lives.
Students who are given opportunities to explore and create while working collaboratively will develop the skills they will need to be successful in any career, including sciences, arts, and business partnerships.
Students with learning disabilities and other challenges will especially shine when working on these STEM labs because they will have the opportunity to learn with diverse modalities such as kinestetic and visual. They'll learn so much more when making musical circuits with items from the refrigerator than they would by doing a worksheet.
This project will surely be a memorable introduction to engineering, computer programming, and coding for my curious sixth graders! Who knows what these young scientists will go on to do, invent and imagine?
