My Students

I teach 20 energetic first graders. Students in first grade make huge gains in their academics and social skills. They love learning and many of them learn in a variety of ways. My class consists of 10 boys and 10 girls. The students have different interests and needs. One thing they have in common is enjoying being able to make choices in the classroom that fit both their needs and interests.

Learning through movement and exploration is vital in first grade.

Critical thinking and problem solving skills are important life-long skills all students need. My students enjoy putting these skills to use through activities throughout the day.

My Project

Supplies are needed to create a mini-STEM lab in my classroom. STEM involves hands-on learning through science, technology, engineering, and math. The supplies involve a variety of building materials. Students will have the opportunity to use these materials to complete tasks individually or with partners.

STEM in first grade will begin the foundation for career ready skills such as critical thinking, problem solving, communication, creativity, and data analysis.

Having a variety of materials for students to explore with is important in a STEM lab. The students will enjoy having choice in materials for hands-on exploration. They will also enjoy completing various challenges with the materials.

I have specifically requested for a variety of great building materials. The Lego Classic Large Creative Bricks, Jasonwell Creative Magnetic Building Blocks, Creative Kids Flakes, and Bo Toys Deluxe Gears will all be used to to make creations while completing building challenges. The Learning Resources Counting Bears will be used to test the strength and stability of their creations. Acerich Colored Pipe Cleaners will be bent and twisted into creations while completing the challenges. The variety of building materials is necessary for the effectiveness of the STEM lab.
