Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school saying is, "Better today than yesterday! Better tomorrow than today!" I want to make their tomorrow better!
My class consists of a diverse group of learners.
The socioeconomic backgrounds of our students are reflected in our 97% free or reduced-price lunch rate. My class has 26 second-grade students of varying abilities. I integrated a superhero theme into the classroom decor this year through various projects. I want them to feel like superheroes and heroines while they navigate our second grade standards throughout the year. As they reach a goal, I have them choose a superhero mask and they pose for a snapshot. This superhero/heroine area has become the fun spot for my learners.
I teach in an urban inner-city school, rich with diversity. Most of my students need additional learning materials to meet grade-level expectations. Please help me to make tomorrow better for them!
My Project
My students are energetic learners. They enjoy learning about the world around them.
Having K'Nex Bridges and Models sets will allow my students to explore STEM activities in Science and Math classes.
My students enjoy STEM challenges.
We recently built homes for the Three Little Pigs in small groups. The Big Bad Wolf went around and tried to blow down their house designs. This activity was very engaging for all of my learners.
I'd love to give them a STEM challenge weekly for them to complete. Each group would be tasked with building the strongest bridge. Groups would come up with bridge designs and then build them with the K'Nex Bridge Set. Each group would then go around and test the bridges for strength. We could use weighted materials to see at which point the bridge would no longer hold up. The group with the strongest bridge could then dream up the next challenge. We would also use the K'Nex Models sets to construct items and see how far they travel or how strong they are in small groups.
I enjoy introducing Engineering projects to my inner city students. I enjoy giving them STEM challenges so they know what real Engineers, Architects, Mathematicians, and Scientists do for a living. I want to excite them to follow up in these fields in the future. Both boys and girls conduct my STEM challenges so it's opening up opportunities for everyone in STEM fields. I think it's important to get them excited at a young age to explore Engineering and Architectural fields.
