My students need five iPads with screen protectors and cases to give my students more access to familiar digital learning. They will have instant access to apps, books, a personalized digital portfolio, and a QR codes.
"We are here to make mistakes, learn, and redesign!" My students have heard our school's motto every morning since we began the transition to be an E-STEM magnet school, the first elementary (E) school in our district focused on science (S), technology (T), engineering (E), and math (M).
A few of my friends who are teachers at other schools in our district thought the idea of transforming our small school into an E-STEM magnet school was an ambitious endeavor.
My reply to them is always the same: not challenging yourself to do better and be better sends a message to anyone you meet on a personal and professional level that you are satisfied with just meeting requirements... getting by. At my school, we want to be different. We want to challenge ourselves, challenge our students, and provide the best learning experience that we can possibly offer. The five and six year old kindergarten students in my class crave engaging experiences and materials that they can put their hands on and explore. They are active, curious, and still excited to learn everything that they can about the world around them. Their school year has been disrupted enough by Hurricane Harvey!
My Project
We need five iPods with screen protectors and cases to give my students more access to familiar digital learning. They will have instant access to apps, books, a personalized digital portfolio, and a QR code reader for use throughout our entire instructional day.
My kindergarten students are eager to build digital portfolios through SeeSaw, and I am excited to guide them through it.
Unfortunately, the lack of handheld devices for documentation is challenging. My students need more access to devices so that they may document their work in the moment.
I use QR codes in my classroom to reinforce concepts in all subject areas. They scan codes to hear letters and sounds, high frequency words, fiction and nonfiction books, numbers, word problems, vocabulary definitions, station directions, etc. all day long. Getting these devices into their hands will keep them engaged in their learning.
