Teaching in a low-income school, you get to see just how under-exposed a lot of students are to things that most students come in contact with everyday. This school year, I am starting to incorporate STEM and Robotics fully in my classroom. From previous years, I have seen the interest in STEM rise. Of the students in my class, none of them have even heard of STEM or even held a robot. I really believe that exposing students to things of this nature at an early age is beneficial.
The middle school that most of my students will attend next year, has a Robotics magnet program.
Some of my previous students, who are in the magnet program, tell me how students that came from other schools, have more experience than they do. I'm trying the break that trend. Although my students come from low-income homes, they try their hardest to succeed at everything they do. I really hope to get my students to realize that just because they come from homes with low income, they can do as well as any other student.
STEM has become the new norm. In most of today's professions, some sort of STEM experience s necessary. My goal is to fully prepare my students for these future necessities. I would like to incorporate STEM in my classroom and have it become routine. I would like to make sure my students are ready for the high level of competitiveness in science technology. I am asking for a set of STEM Careers books, a STEM challenge kit, and a set of rockets.
My project will help prepare my students' for future careers in the area of STEM.
The STEM careers books will allow me to incorporate literature into my STEM program. The students can read and see the different careers that involve STEM. The STEM learning labs will be used to relate STEM with the real-world. in the hopes that it will also connect their background knowledge to the real-world challenges. Building and engineering rockets is a thrill for all students. Allowing them to see the work behind rocket science will peak their interest even more.
