Our Title I school is located in a close-knit, rural community near Syracuse, New York. Many of the families at our school have been in the school district for generations. Agriculture is an important part of the local economy, as apple orchards flourish on the rolling hills. My second-grade students' learning styles and needs are as diverse as their backgrounds, but they all have the yearning to be successful.
My kids are curious about the world around them and enjoy solving their own questions through experiments and hands-on activities.
Every Friday in our classroom, students participate in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) Challenges and have time to tinker in our classroom maker space. This is a wonderful way to end our school week.
"Creativity is inventing, experimenting, growing, taking risks, breaking rules, making mistakes, and having fun.” ― Mary Lou Cook
My Project
My project was inspired by Mrs. Johnson's winning project, "Women in STEM Exploration, Innovation & Communication through Video Production". Next month, we will be reading biographies of influential female leaders who have contributed to the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) in honor of Women’s History Month. Using the requested books and IF/THEN online resources, the students will learn all about paleontologists Mary Anning, Sue Henderickson, and Myria Perez.
Students will learn to excavate fossils by watching the IF/THEN video titled, "Cool Tools: Digging Up Fossils".
Then, my paleontologists will use the fossil kits and tools such as brushes, magnifying glasses, and pith helmets to dig for fossils like the scientists they learned about in class. The dinosaur goodies will be used for reading activities.
My homeroom students will have a chance to create their own video about a famous paleontologist using fossils, their own creations, our green screen, and the Do Ink app. With these engaging activities, I hope to excite my students about the endless possibilities in the field of STEM and encourage them to learn more about STEM leaders.
