This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Our small school is located in Northeast, DC. Our students come from a range of socioeconomic backgrounds. Our scholars enjoy learning, but face many challenges in their day to day life outside of school. Our school is 100% Title I.
Our students need more access to hands-on STEM activities to increase their exposure to STEM in a fun and engaging way.
The teachers and staff at our school are extremely committed to the students and work hard to mitigate the traumas that children experience outside of school. However, there is limited funding for extras and staff fund raise or contribute to stretch our school budget.
My Project
Students are always looking for hands-on experiences. What better place than in the library? Cardboard is readily available in our building, so having the Makedo tools would be wonderful for our students. Using these tools to create they can experience hands-on learning and use real life application of concepts learned in class--math, speaking, listening, art and collaboration.
We are preparing our students for careers that do not yet exist.
Our younger learners will be excited to use the magna tiles as centers as part of their regular library visits. Our older students will embrace using challenge cards to create structures.
Students learn best when they can touch, feel and see what they are doing. These STEM/STEAM materials will enable them to do just that.
