This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach Emotional Support students in grades 4-6 in a low-income school district. All of our students receive free breakfast and lunch. I want my students to have access to every opportunity that children in affluent districts have access to. Most of my students read below grade level. This however, doesn't deter them from working hard and dreaming big.
STEM activities are designed to be hands on and keep them engaged while allowing them to collaborate, cooperate and communicate.
I want to foster their interest in STEM related activities. I want them to be equipped with skills that will allow them to be successful adults.
My students love coming to school. We provide them with a safe place, and they are able to be kids. I want them to feel confident in their abilities, and I know that the STEM activities I am trying to give them access to, will build up their confidence.
My Project
The STEM Challenge Cards help students practice essential stem skills with 30 unique, open-ended challenge cards. The cards encourage learning with questions in each of the five steam areas and a simple explanation of the science behind the challenge. I want to use these cards in centers in my class and to teach important social skills my students need to practice.
I am looking to introduce my students to STEM activities that help them master 21st-century skills, that help them understanding physical science and engineering, as well as skills in basic coding.
My young engineers will boost their STEM skills as they complete one hands-on challenge after another—from constructing a spinning windmill to building a solvable maze. All this while collaborating and discussing each step.
