Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are imaginative, creative and fun-loving first graders. Many of my students come from low-income households and have not had much experience with the world outside their small community.
Anything my students are given they appreciate, and nothing is ever taken for granted.
Many of my students don't have the ability to learn online and depend on worksheet packets and whatever books they have at home. Despite the hardships they are facing with school being closed, they are eager learners
My Project
This STEM based project will help develop problem-solving, social and communication skills for my first grade students. Since our school closed, I hold Google Meets video meetings with my students weekly and plan to use these materials in our discussions. These materials will allow my students to use their imaginations and creativity to challenge their engineering and problem solving skills. The books will help foster their learning of shadows and lights. I plan to continue to teach our shadow and lights unit that I started before our school closed during our video meetings. The books, Moonbear's Shadow and The Black Rabbit will help me to virtually teach my first graders and hello them grasp our science concepts. I plan to use the play dough and magnetic blocks to create models to demonstrate shadows and further their understanding from home.
I will be able to use these materials while teaching my students on-line from home and when we physically return to school.
These materials will allow my students the opportunity to use their imagination and creativity while supporting STEM activities by creating, designing, and constructing. My students will be thrilled to work on fun projects while learning science and engineering concepts!
