This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

When you think about students learning English as a Second Language, you probably think about the teaching of grammar, vocabulary, and language. Which you are correct, but sometimes the teaching of these language domains might be taught in isolation.

Rethinking the way that we teach language, I have changed my instructional approach to integrate science and English Language Development.

We know that students learn best when we teach about items that matter to them, are hands on activities, and create curiosity. This year, I have created my professional development number 1 need to integrate Science with English Development in teaching English Language Learner (ELs).

I am currently starting with the unit of Social and Group Animal Behavior to teach ELs about plural tense. Teaching about groups will allow me to teach students the concept that more than one, we construct a plural sense. The graph paper will allow me to write about rules in grammar, easily moving them around the classroom because they are sticky in the back. The Expos will be used to classify and color code information, making it easier for ELs to decipher information. The books are supplementary materials that discuss animal group behavior in English and Spanish. The composition books will be used as Science notebooks for students in my classroom. Since my students are in a pull-out setting, they often do not bring additional items to our classroom, therefore, these notebooks are essential.

Integrating STEM activities with language learning opportunities not only makes learning fun, but it increases engagement and improves academic learning. I am excited to start this new learning approach with the help of our Donors choose community. Thank you!
