I teach in a very small, high-poverty, rural district in deep East Texas. Many of our students come from low socio-economic backgrounds with varying physical, social and intellectual levels and many begin school at risk for educational and social struggles. My 5th graders come to school excited and ready to learn, and I want to foster that excitement and provide them with the tools they need to succeed.
Our school was recently designated a K-12 STEM Academy, one of only 6 in the state.
We will provide advanced instruction in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math, and prepare them opportunities to be successful in the workforce of tomorrow. In order to prepare our students to be problem solvers in tomorrow's workforce, we strive to provide them with hands-on tools to reinforce the concepts introduced in our STEM lessons.
My Project
My students need hands-on resources to bring Science, Technology, Engineering and Math to life though exploration of the physical properties of matter, magnetism, force, motion, mixtures and compounds. These hands on activities will help reinforce otherwise abstract science concepts by allowing students to experience and manipulate materials related to these science concepts. Students will use these materials to design their own experiments on the concept of force and motion, manipulate/troubleshoot electrical circuitry and explore electromagnetism. Students will also use the games to practice and review lesson content and vocabulary throughout the year and hopefully foster an excitement for STEM careers.
