Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school serves a high-poverty population, with 99% of students qualifying for the free and reduced lunch program. It is a K-5, Spanish Dual Language school, and serves a high number of English Language Learners.
Despite the everyday challenges that these students face, they come to school each day ready to learn and grow.
The students that I work with are energetic, creative, collaborative, critical thinkers who have a strong desire for knowledge. They deserve and need opportunities and access to materials and experiences that other children receive.
My Project
As STEM occupation opportunities grow, it is important that our students gain opportunities in understanding math, science, technology and engineering, so that they have the background to pursue a career in STEM.
My classroom needs STEM strategy games that can challenge students cognitively!
The materials that I am requesting are to engage students in STEM games that require critical thinking, reasoning, and problem solving skills. These games will push students thinking and allow them to work on developing higher order thinking strategies and thus enabling the next generation of innovators! For example, the game, Make N' Break provides students experience in engineering as they become a "master builder", while cooperating with peers.
In addition, these games will give students opportunities to practice 21st century social skills that go along with strategy playing games, such as collaboration, leadership, cooperation, and teamwork.
