Mr. Covotsos from Brooklyn NY is requesting instructional technology through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.

STEM From Above

My students need a drone to observe the landscape of our community and other natural settings (e.g., parks) from a totally new and exciting perspective...the air.

My Students

A typical day in my classroom consists of students working collaboratively to learn science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). More importantly, they are being taught how they can take the information they learn in the classroom and apply that information to the real world.

My students are very motivated and hard working.

They really enjoy science and having the opportunity to push themselves to new levels. Our school is a small elementary/middle school and even with the limited STEM supplies we have, they still have a huge desire to learn science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Almost everyday at lunch I have about 10-15 students that come up to my room to learn programming and robotics. With my help and the proper resources they will become the next great scientists of the 21st Century.

My Project

Students in my school routinely visit parks and other natural locations (e.g. ponds, nature preserves, etc.) in an effort to connect theory and practice. Students are asked to apply their learning to real-world situations. Through the scientific method (and application of STEM principles) they question, hypothesize, and make observations about the natural world.

However, when we visit these natural locations I feel my students are missing out on the bigger picture.

They focus on one location and are not provided with the opportunity to make connections to the entire site which we are visiting. If they are provided with a different, aerial perspective, then I think they will be able to make more detailed and concrete observations and inferences.

Additionally, they would be able to gain more perspective and appreciation if they could view these locations from the air. Most of my students have never been in a plane and have the opportunity to see the world form that perspective. I am hoping a drone will provide them with an opportunity to do so and fuel their desire to learn...and hopefully be the scientists of a new generation.
