Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students attend a Title I school and are from diverse ethnic/cultural backgrounds, namely Bangladeshi, Chinese, Hispanic, and French. 95% of them are Latino and African America. The rest are sparsely mixed with other ethnicities. In my classroom, there are students with a range of disabilities, including intellectual disabilities, emotional disturbance, autism spectrum disorder and specific learning disabilities.
As a K/1 bridge class, many of my 1st graders are reading way below grade level and my kindergarteners are reading below the Pre-k level which is partly due to their strong Hispanic backgrounds.
Many struggle with basic phonics and number sense. In addition, my nonverbal students are particularly interested in building structures which require problem-solving skills.
It is my hope that by the end of June, given the proper supports, there will be marked improvement in reading and Math scores. The opportunity and achievement gaps are clearly apparent among our student population.
My Project
The students in my class need materials that focus on phonemic awareness, letter recognition and the exploration and augmentation of math concepts. In addition, they need STEM activities to help stimulate their critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
They will use these materials to explore their varied abilities through creating structures, building words by putting sounds together, as well as using math manipulatives to help reinforce math concepts.
These activities will be used throughout the day as an extension of core lessons but especially during choice time or Learning centers. Your generous donations will help improve the reading levels and math scores of my students.
