Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach at a Title I school where a vast majority of the students are living in poverty, are English Learners or are both. Our school is a safe place for our students, and they absolutely love to learn. The majority of the students are English Language Learners who are very new to the English language, many who are only getting exposure to the English language while at school. As English Language Learners, they are working tirelessly to manipulate words and sounds in the English language.
These students greatly benefit from hands-on opportunities where they can explore in a way that makes concepts concrete and understandable, making it easier for them to connect English to their native language, allowing them to be successful students.
My Project
Students greatly benefit from hands-on learning opportunities. STEM provides a great opportunity for students to learn in a hands-on manner. As the STEM leader in my school, I am challenged with helping teachers see the value in STEM and providing them with tools and resources to incorporate STEM into their instruction. This project will be a step towards building the teachers' capacities and encouraging incorporating more STEM into their instruction.
Students at my school are not only expected to learn the curriculum but at the same time they are expected to learn English, as hundreds of the students are English Language Learners.
This is a very challenging hurdle, but it is not one that these students cannot overcome.
Through STEM, students are able to grasp language and curricular outcomes as the language becomes applicable and students are able to building meaning through their experiences. Building things such as a roller coaster with the K'NEX kit can become so much more than just "building." Through that building experience students will be discussing (building language), reading, using math, and of course the building part. STEM is a unique opportunity to teach students all that they need without adding extra work, but instead giving the students great enrichment opportunities.
