Help me give my students 3 STEM kits that will travel home with students to encourage family engagement. Each STEM kit will be placed in a backpack and travel home with a different student each week!
In my classroom, there are twenty six, first grade students in a rural school district in PA. Our elementary school is considered a Title I school, which means that we have a high percentage of children from low-income families. They come from various backgrounds, interests and academic levels.
My students are eager to learn at their full potential and I want to give them that great opportunity by offering various learning methods and a unique and warm classroom design.
I hope to inspire all of my learners to be the best people they can be.
My Project
I'm not a fan of homework in first grade as I would rather see families spend their time enjoying each other's company and reading for fun. In place of homework, I send home "Take Home Bags" that incorporate fun games about what we are learning in class. This year, I would like to include 3 STEM bags. The STEM kits coincide with a nursery rhyme and include a book and other fun various learning tools. Take Home Bags go home each Monday and return to school on Friday and each student gets a turn with each bag. Families have all week to work on the activities inside.
I believe in positive family engagement that incorporates fun with learning.
Kids are excited to take these bags home and STEM bags are only going to increase their passion and drive for learning. Eventually, I would like to see the drawer organizer to implement a "makey" bag that students would use to create and invent based on the materials gathered.
