My third graders are a group of fun, creative, and unique individuals. They love to question and explore. Our school is a PLTW Title One school with grades 2nd-5th. The students in our school come from many different backgrounds with many different needs. My class this year is a group of gifted and talented students that enjoy exploring new concepts and digging deeper into their learning.
In my classroom there's no I can't, instead its I can't yet!
I encourage my students to be problem solvers and to set goals for what they want to achieve as learners. My students are working to have a growth mind set, using persistence. We are as working on building collaboration/cooperation skills, including empathy, through working with others on activities; whether in small groups or pairs.
Our classroom is a comfortable safe place students feel free to make mistakes. As I always tell my students, "mistakes are proof that you are trying and that your brain is thinking." My students love to explore new strategies of learning and they love learning in different ways, hands on being one of their favorite!
My Project
The materials that I am requesting for my students will truly help them stretch their thinking and work on problem solving. These materials are all hands-on and I have already planned out (if we are LUCKY enough to be funded with YOUR help) how I will implement them into our classroom. The dominoes and fraction towers are great hands-on activities for explorations in math. The dominoes will be multi-functioning in our math lessons connecting to our math standards in third grade from addition up to fractions. The fraction towers will help my students who are visual and tactile learners, which is most of my class, deepen their understanding of fractions (which is a very challenging concept for most third graders). They will be able to see how fractions are built, compare fractions, find equivalent fractions, add/subtract fractions and convert to decimals. In reference to the circuits and STEM materials; these will go seamlessly with our schools PLTW implementation and align perfectly with our science standards.
These hands-on activities will help my students make authentic real world connections to their learning, deepen their understanding by increasing their exposure, as well as help them work on perseverance and cooperation.
