My students need to have these wonderful STEM items to help them become better creators, thinkers, problem solvers, doers, innovators, and inventors in my classroom.
My class of 27 students are full of life and energy. Never does a day go by that I don't learn something new from my students. I have students who have learned to be more vocal and letting others hear their voices for the first time. I have students who are HUGE book worms and will plow you down for that new book I put out each week. Of course, I can't forget those wonderful shy students who love doing everything quickly and quietly, to please me.
My days are always full of new adventures, understandings, and life lessons with this class.
As we research, write, and create our different themes and units, my students will always have something to add from their unique backgrounds. "Mrs. Leonard, did you know that we might be able to live on Mars? I am really excited to live on Mars!" student A.
With a differentiated class of 27 students, I have been kept on my toes all year long trying to bring out the excitement and lesson opportunities that will give them the best impact of knowledge retention they can have.
My Project
STEM is a word you hear these days, but do you actually know what it means or how important it is? STEM is science, technology, engineering, and math. These are all areas of learning that our kids need to be comfortable with to excel in the future.
My class would excel and go beyond the call of normal school thinking with these great mind teasing STEM kits and activities.
During our unit learning about circuits, we could use the Snap Circuits to give the kids a more hands-on understanding using real pieces and having them figure out how to light the bulb different ways. The Spheros would be a great STEM Friday lesson on coding, using directions, setting up mazes, motion and design, and working with groups. The Gravity Maze Marble and Skoolzy and Straws make great small group or individual STEM learning when done within our normal day to day activities.
With hands-on learning and working to figure it out themselves, these activities would help to fill the gap between reading about it and actually doing it. Exposing these kids to simple STEM ideas at an early age today can set a foundation for higher learning tomorrow.
