This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
STEM provides and inspires students with an understanding that everything is connected, it is OK to make mistakes and learn from them, project base learning requires teamwork and THEY are the problem solvers for the FUTURE. My students (OUR FUTURE) need this opportunity for STEM practices!
My students are from a HIGH poverty school and community.
Many of these students come from a low-income and often a single parent home. On the positive side, many of our parents are supportive of their child's education and know it is mean for a better life. Despite these challenges and limitations that lay on my students, they work hard and are always excited for STEM block. They know to be a problem solver will take a lot of work and are determined to setup to the challenge and succeed. Here in New Mexico we have a high demand for the STEM related fields and need to get our students ready and up to date with the knowledge and practices for these jobs.
My Project
To implement and introduce STEM problem solving, inquiry, teamwork, and engineering practices to students in the K- 3 grade levels were a lack of resources exist. These kits can help students get an early start to develop 21st-century skills with hands-on manipulatives for future STEM practice and knowledge. Students will be introduced to pulleys, levers, gears, wheels and axles, energy, buoyancy, and balance and discover basic structure concepts; balance within structures, building, and stability by building fun and simple models. Later they will continue concepts such as gears, pulleys, levers, and wheels and axles through observation, reasoning, prediction, and critical thinking.
I am STEM teacher for K-5 at my school and would have students use the kits through the year in the technology lab or for teachers to checkout when not in use.
The kits would also be used as a family activity for our Math and Science night. Together we will make positive changes for our community, nation and planet!
