Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are amazing! My students are bilingual some have recently immigrated to the United States and know very little English. My students do not let their circumstance control them. They understand they need to be diligent workers and give 110% of themselves to their work. They are eager to have a STEM club and work with coding and engineering.
My students come from many different countries from Romania, Mexico, and Honduras and many more but technology can help level their playing field and help them further their critical thinking skills.
Our classroom is an engaging group of students that help one another. Some of my students collaborate with one another after-school by face timing each other and working through difficult language arts and math problem. Our parents are active members even though they are experiencing so many financial constraints. Our school continues to be a level 1+ school for the past 2 years and 100% of the students receive free lunch. Our parent and students understand the importance of having a good education and making a difference in this world.
My Project
At the Pathfinders Summer Institute, I will participate in some hands-on training on how to bring The Junior Botball Challenge to our middle school. The Computer Science program provides equipment, software, curriculum and professional development so that I can teach our students computer science and critical thinking skills as well as the application of engineering design process. The curriculum is aligned with Common Core Standard and the Next Generation Science Standards.
Students will benefit from this STEM program and better prepare them for the 21st century.
The inquiry-based program focuses on discrete programming skills and engineering design concepts design to improve computational thinking skills and promote mastery.
