My Students

My kindergarten students are a sweet group of twenty-one kiddos. They are a very large and active group requiring lots of hands-on activities. It takes lots of strategies to keep their focus and attention.

Our school, Maxwell Elementary, is in Alabama and is sixty-three perrcent free or reduced price lunch although our classroom consists of a higher percentage.

Several of the students live with someone other than their parents and many live in a one-parent home.

There are various ethnic groups in our class which makes us a unique group. Some of the children speak three languages, including English. I enjoy sharing my classroom with a diverse group because it helps us become socially sensitive. We also have some challenging behaviors which help us tolerate others.

My Project

"Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once he grows up." ~Pablo Picasso. Art promotes creativity. Art boosts critical thinking. Art is everything that kindergarten students need! Through art, my students could build fine motor skills and stamina to work.

The majority of my students qualify for free or reduced price lunch.

Most students are considered from low-income households.

My job is to provide students as many experiences as possible while they are in my classroom. Each day, my students enter our classroom with a big smile. They come to school to learn and to experience something new everyday. I offer non-traditional, hands-on experiences as well as other effective strategies, which is known as DAP or developmentally appropriate practices. My primary goal is to teach children to be self-directed learners who seek resources to find answers. I love coming to school teach everyday. I think my students love coming to school to learn too.

We have limited learning supplies at our school. To be successful in life, you need to be creative. How could my students think creatively when they have such limited resources? I would like my students to freely express their thinking and ideas. I am asking for various types of STEM materials.

All children deserve to learn, but not all children learn the same way.
