This will be my 20th year of teaching 2nd graders! I love "my kids" for so many reasons. I love how compassionate they are; they love to share. They're always willing to help each other, and they really do want to do the right thing. Their hearts are so big, caring, and kind. They have lots of energy and love to learn. And best of all, they think I'm funny!
Talking and getting to really know my students helps pave the way for learning.
Once trust is established, then learning can take place and one very important goal I have is to help make school fun and engaging for them. I think capitalizing on Science, Math, Engineering, and Technology does that.
My Project
Our schedule starts every day with an RTI block and while I'm working with small groups, I would LOVE to give my kids the option of starting the day with STEM bins. Things like Magna Tiles are an expensive item, but that is the only item I still need to fill the STEM bins. In order for it to work, I need the supply tubs and pencil pouches so the materials will be all ready and easy for them to grab and go. They will get to rotate stations and use the wobble chairs for flex seating. When students are given options to pick what they'd like to learn and a comfortable spot to sit, it creates a magical, engaged classroom environment.
I want to capitalize on their natural curiosity and also get them engaged in school right when they come in the door.
If they know they can start the day with something that they think is fun, the day is already a win-win. They're activiely learning and engaged and I'll be able to work with my small groups with minimal interruptions. And when there's an organized space and system in place, it will be successful. I'm also asking for an electric pencil sharpener because the kids will be using their colored pencils and pencils daily, so we'll definitely need a good pencil sharpener that can keep up with us!
I can't wait to try this project and have been wanting to add this much needed area to my curriculum for a year now. Thank you very much for your time and consideration!
