In my classroom, students have opportunities to imagine, create, experiment, persevere, collaborate, and problem solve so they can build the necessary skills in science, technology, engineering, and math to become college and career ready.
My students are a linguistically, economically, and culturally diverse group.
The school that I teach at is a Title I school. About forty percent of my students are below the poverty level. Fifty-six percent of my students are minorities, and for over forty-five percent, English is their second language. These students bring with them unique and personal experiences that enrich our classroom. They are learning to accept risk, and to see mistakes, re-dos, and multiple attempts as a part of the learning process. I learn something from them every day!
My Project
The goal of this project is to enrich our classroom’s STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) Inventor’s Lab by filling it with materials that will encourage students to collaborate, invent, take risks, and experiment, while participating in STEM challenges.
Participation in STEM challenges that align with Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), shifts the focus of learning from an outcome-driven curriculum to a process-driven curriculum.
The students in my class build the skills necessary for reflection, critical thinking, and problem solving. Students learn to accept risks and see mistakes and multiple attempts as a part of the innovation process in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Appropriate materials for designing and building are essential to the process.
Using Tinker Toys, building blocks, and engineering toys, students will challenge themselves to design, build, and test roller coasters, marble mazes, playgrounds, tree houses and much more.
With the right materials, the possibilities are endless.
