Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Gandhi once said, "be the change you want to see in the world." For my students, this seems like an almost impossible challenge. I strive for all of my students to take this quote and apply it to their lives daily. My students live in a low socioeconomic community. There is very little technology in their homes.
Many of my students are just waiting for the right tool to use to show their light-bulb moment.
The community in which I teach is not the easiest environment for growing leaders. I often remind students that they can do anything they want, no matter what environment they come from. I am asked all the time for chances to work with technology. My students do not have computers at home, much less the internet. This proves to be extremely challenging for the hours they are in school for me to introduce and provide opportunities for students to use technology.
My Project
Learning is not what is was even 10 years ago. Science curriculum has evolved dramatically within the last 5 years. There is a swinging shift to STEM curriculum. Students are constantly surrounded by technology; it only makes sense that this technology be used to enhance their educational surroundings. With the new implementation of the NGSS standards for Science, the classroom environment must change from reading out of a textbook to experiencing learning. These Lego STEM kits will provide hands-on interactive and engaging activities for students. Building models and persevering in analyzing the inter-workings of these models is a great way to build stamina to the new standards.
