My students need the stools and the table to have room to design and move about the room while working on their hands-on STEM projects to code a the robots to draw and create.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Energetic bodies need room to move when creating and working on their STEM products. My students range from ages 5 to 12 and they are enthusiastic learners who love hands-on STEM activities.
They are mostly from low income families (85% receive free and reduced lunch) and attend a school that's underfunded and under-served, but this does not keep them from enjoying STEM activities that deal with robots, the arts and design thinking.
Many of them are ELL learners or struggling readers and project based hands-on learning is essential to their progress and developing 21st century skills.
My Project
Imagine a room of energetic children sitting in traditional seats in a crowded area. The flip table and wobbly stools will provide space and flexible seating while the children use the sketch pad to display programs that they created with the Dash robots. The sketch mat is a way to demonstrate in a tangible way the application of coding that the children are learning.
The materials will take our Dash robots to a new level of engagement while the 3-D doodler filaments will give the kids an opportunity to bring projects that normally only exist on paper to life in a tangible format.
Hands-on learning through the combination of STEM and design thinking brings an element of learning to students that is more substantial and meaningful than the traditional pen and paper approach. It helps them to take skills that they are learning on iPads and other computer devices to the next level.
