Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I work with students who are English language learners and have learning disabilities. They also come from families that struggle with paying bills and affording school supplies and books. Despite these challenges, my students bring many strengths to the classroom, including a passion for learning and a willingness to take risks as they acquire the building blocks of reading.

My students love math, science, computers, and art, and they love learning how things work.

They are curious about the world and are eager to improve their literacy skills.

My Project

The soft, pliable clay and delicate, wooden sculpting tools will give my students an opportunity to exercise their creativity and problem solving skills while honing fine motor skills. My students will choose an animal or plant to sculpt after researching STEM topics about Earth Day online and in books. They will use the sculpting tools to add eyes, fur, scales, claws, patterns, and designs. Once their unique creations have dried overnight, my students will paint their art with coats of colorful, vivid acrylic paint.

In her website Lakeside Pottery, Patty Storms writes about "The forgiving quality of clay, and therefore the ability to readily fix mistakes, gives the child a sense of control over their project’s success which improves self esteem and self expression as they realize that mistakes aren’t going to stop their progress".

Students who are given opportunities to work with clay can develop a stronger sense of self and pride in their work while viewing mistakes as part of the learning process. Working with clay is calming and can become a lifelong hobby that students can turn to throughout their lives when they need to relax.

Incorporating art into science lessons helps students with diverse learning modalities access the curriculum. Students who are reluctant readers will gain interest in topics such as climate change, endangered animals, biomes, and sustainable living when given the opportunity to extend their learning with creative projects.
