My Students

My third-grade students are enthusiastic, diverse learners. Most of them are just beginning their educational career, and are looking forward to gaining knowledge in English Language Arts, Math, Science, and Social Studies. They are excited to experience everything third grade has to offer.

My students are often working against hardship to become successful learners.

Most come from low-income households, and many are English Language Learners. They are striving to develop new skills in spite of these challenges. They work hard and are excited to learn!

My Project

Each day, my students will walk into my classroom, ready to learn and explore. In years past, I have used worksheets to get our day started and to keep students on task.

After seeing the need for more hands-on activities and more opportunities to practice social skills, I have decided that our days will be better started with conversation, creativity, and engagement through the use of morning tubs.

Using a variety of materials will allow students to explore and converse with each other as they prepare for the day. By sparking creativity as students build and manipulate the items, their brains will be readied to absorb and interpret the new information and ideas to which they are exposed. The morning tubs will allow for some flexibility and choice and will give students more chances to interact with one another on a personal level.

I am requesting Magna-Tiles, K'Nex, Cuisenaire Rods, Math Vocabulary, and a Brain Flakes set to help my students explore math and science. Since students will be able to choose from three of these materials on a daily basis, they will be exposed to a variety of textures and shapes, which is great for my kinesthetic learners. They will be developing critical thinking skills, problem-solving, and teamwork--skills that will translate to all kinds of real-life scenarios both in and out of school--as they play and explore. Many of my students come from low-income households, so it is my hope that I can provide them with items they may not have had the opportunity to use.
