My students are bouncy, happy, energetic four and five year-olds who are entering the world of formal education via the Transitional Kindergarten program here in California. They come from a range of experiences; some have gone to preschool, others have never been away from their homes or the care of their parents until now. All of them are ready to learn and are excited to come to class each day.
What looks like "play" is some of the most intensive, satisfying learning experiences they will encounter in their school lives.
I try to engage them in as much hands-on learning as possible. I want them to satisfy their natural curiosity by exploring the world around them using various manipulatives and materials.
My Project
TK kids are natural scientists; they are curious, creative and excited about learning. The materials I am requesting will supply them with everything they need in order to enrich and extend their critical thinking skills.
Pairing our language arts unit on fairy tales with a STEM-based activity like The Three Little Pigs kit will give children an opportunity to problem solve a real-life conundrum in a fun an engaging way.
The Magformers can be used to create specific structures or to get creative and come up with new and intriguing ideas as the students explore the materials.
I am excited to give my young learners more hands-on opportunities!
