This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
97 percent of the students in our school are from low income families. We are an IB PYP school in Augusta, GA. We are a self contained classroom. We love project based learning that actively engages our skills in STEM and language arts.
67 percent of my students are below expectations on recent data, but we are determined to change that.
Our classroom model operates on direct instruction and small groups with differentiated guidance. As the school year has just begun, I have noticed a greater strength in the students' drive for learning. They are becoming more organized, learning study skills, and taking an initiative to find and solve problems.
My Project
My students will communicate and collaborate in cooperative groups as they create code to operate their Sphero mini balls. Many of my students enter everyday from low socio-economic housing areas. Many already feel defeated at the age of 10. I have seen a change in students' confidence when learning to code and actually experiencing the ability to create a code that works. That feeling of accomplishment can be inspiring for other subject areas in the classroom. I would be able to use these Sphero mini app-controlled balls in my fifth grade classroom as well as in our STEM club that meets after school for grades 3-5.
My students will be able to use critical thinking skills as well as cooperative learning applications to create and solve STEM coding scenarios.
My students are naturally competitive and enjoy challenges in small groups. Our students aspire to move on to magnet schools in the area. Your generous donation could lead our students to careers in the cyber world.
