My after-school science club consists of 50 curious, thoughtful, creative, and hard-working students ranging in grades 6-8 who have an interest in deepening their knowledge of scientific concepts through hands-on inquiry based instructional activities. These students are passionate about STEM and are our future scientists and mathematicians of the world.
More than half of the students involved in science club are female and are motivated in changing the stereotype that only males can succeed in STEM based subject areas and careers.
Our school serves students in grades PK-8 with a variety of different economic, cultural, and academic backgrounds. Our district is a Title 1 district with 100% of our students receiving free or reduced lunch, and our school mission statement is to create pathways to success for all students. In science club, my students are striving towards the pathway of STEM based careers by relating the scientific method to real-world problem solving situations involving architecture, engineering, mathematics, and technology. Science club provides these students with extra time after school to engage in in-depth exploration of these problems that they may not receive during their regular science class.
Having the STEM kits will provide students with a variety of tools, resources, and art supplies to construct and design various models for different timed challenges, such as bridges, cars, catapults, and towers.
Your donations to this project will help support my students' interests and growth into STEM careers.
These materials will give students a variety of ways to solve a problem using hands-on inquiry methods and also allow their creativity and innovative designs to come to life. I look forward to seeing their excitement, determination and competitiveness for STEM problem solving challenges during our extracurricular science club after school.
