Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our wonderful school is in a high poverty area in Chicago. My junior high students are polite, well-mannered, hard-working students who come from good homes. Many of my students are diverse learners with ADHD, learning disabilities, or cognitive delays; many come from another country or are first-generation Americans. They all face challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite their obstacles, my students come into my classroom eager to learn and do their best every day. These students are extremely diverse in terms of academic ability. This diversity is great, but as a teacher, it can be a challenge to reach all my students when they are at different levels academically.
My goal is to make sure that all students, regardless of where they are academically, have all the tools they need to be successful and become lifelong learners.
Each and every one of them has the potential to be successful. I want to equal the playing field for my students so they have all the tools necessary to excel in school and in life.
My Project
Our Chicago classroom was lucky enough to receive STEM supplies recently. The days that we do centers are our favorite days. Our classroom shows so many active learners. We have robots, simple machine kits, and Legos for experimenting and creating various engineering activities. Since I see over 600 students per week and many of them have special needs, we need more supplies so everyone gets an opportunity with the hands-on materials.
The engineering and design kits will help my students use their imaginations to build their dream city.
Many of them have not been outside Chicago so I'm sure we will have many interesting end products. The racer kits will help build more engineering skills. We have two circuit kits now and my students fight over them. By ordering two more of these everyone can get a turn. These kits will encourage a greater love of all things STEM. All these materials will help us continue to learn and grow together.
