I teach in a Title I school with children from various backgrounds and social status. The majority of my students are on the free or reduced breakfast/lunch program. I have students who are living in temporary housing and a lot of the parents are having hard times and do the best with what they have. As a result, it is difficult for my students to have access to technology on a regular basis at home.
The opportunity to make a difference in a child's life is why I went into teaching and the students in my classroom show me on a daily basis it is the right choice.
It may be that smile I get when they see me coming to get them from the playground, or the hug that they give me first thing, or it may be as simple as a picture they drew that they want me to have. The parents of these students are trying so hard to give their child the best opportunity they can. That is why they bring them to school. We have a good reputation in our community; I feel lucky to be their teacher.
My Project
Legos give students the opportunity to use their hands, their imaginations, and their people skills to work together to learn. Not only will they be enjoying their learning, but they will bring in mathematics and literacy as well. The students can sort and count the Legos. They can create imaginary robots or animals and then write about them during writing.
Children build their spatial and proportional awareness when working with Legos.
Decomposing and composing is an essential skill for number sense mastery in early learners and Legos are perfect for this concept. Legos are very good for using when teaching part to part to total comparisons. Also, counting by 2's is another idea for using Legos.
