My students need the STEM activities kit, magnetic design center and coaster activity set to teach creativity and problem solving, while these specimens teach about life.
John Dewey once said that "Education is not preparation for life, but life itself." Special needs children are often left out of the daily routine of school and play. In a changing world they will need more support and opportunity to shine.
This class is a 12:1:1 self-contained special education bridge class that spans kindergarten to grade 2.
There is often the belief that special needs children should not have much expected from them, we intend to change that false perception. This is an area that was hit hard by hurricane Sandy, many families were displaced, some still are and the emotional needs of many of these children have reached a crisis point. Education may be their way out of the doldrums and their opportunity to exceed expectations.
My Project
The United States Department of Education has expressed concerns that in an ever-changing world that is becoming increasingly digital, there is more of a need for our students to excel in STEM subjects. "In a world that’s becoming increasingly complex, where success is driven not only by what you know, but by what you can do with what you know, it’s more important than ever for our youth to be equipped with the knowledge and skills to solve tough problems, gather and evaluate evidence, and make sense of information. These are the types of skills that students learn by studying science, technology, engineering, and math." We want to ensure that these students not only excel personally but help to ensure the success of our future country and world.
Mahatma Gandhi once said "You must be the change you wish to see in the world." We want to ensure that our kids have access to the outside world with materials that are not always so easily accessible.
These materials give the students the opportunity to see how our world works within the confines of their own worlds. We want to inspire them to be that change that Gandhi spoke of.
