Ms. Moats from Peoria IL is requesting classroom basics through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need magnets, a gear set, tangrams, Duplo bicks and more to help them explore science, including force and motion.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
As a teacher in a low-income, high poverty school district, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, I am looking to keep things simple and provide my students with creative and meaningful learning experiences.
My students are creative, clever and very spontaneous.
They like to move, they love to read and love lots of positive attention. Many of them are being raised in single parent households and receive a free lunch based on their socioeconomic status. These things may prevent them from getting ahead early in life and may not provide them with the life experiences many of us see as "typical."
From the minute they walk in the door of my classroom, I focus on their potential and growth. I may not be able to control their home lives, however, I can certainly control their experience during the school day. By doing this in a creative and positive way, I am hoping to inspire even our earliest learners to continue on a path of academic excellence.
These materials are going to make a big difference in my classroom. We will be using the STEM materials during their structured play time. My students will be able to explore force and motion using the magnets and the other STEM kits. They will explore how to build using the legos and gears. My students will also go a step further and will draw a picture of what they build and eventually write a sentence using the dry erase markers on their dry erase mats. By using these STEM kits, my students will feel like they are playing, but in reality they are learning science and engineering skills.
Engagement is crucial for our students.
They live in a digital world where they believe they can find the answers online or via You Tube. Teachers need to use materials to encourage their engagement in their learning. Students need to understand "why" they are learning and not just "what" they are learning. STEM materials help make that happen.
STEM is going to be an important part of these students future. They need to be very familiar with the concepts of STEM. Having these materials available and using them throughout the day will help that to happen!
