STEM Books for Current Readers and Future World-Changers

My students need a fully refurbished nonfiction library full of books they actually want to read.

My Students

My school's district spans the populations of New York City: students who live in public housing to students who live on Park Avenue; students whose parents are building superintendents and students whose parents are consuls at the UN; students who are learning English and students with disabilities. They come from every nationality and ethnicity, from Colombia to Malta to Korea to Afghanistan.

And together, in my classroom, they're one strong, amazing community.

Our goal is to learn from each other and grow together. Success in our classroom is building independence, reflectiveness, flexibility, mutual respect, and a joy in discovering together!

My Project

Our current classroom nonfiction library is old and out of touch. Almost all the books have been in my room since I entered it nine years ago, and they weren't new then. Many of my readers already spent last year in my then-fourth-grade classroom and have already read all the nonfiction that was even kind of fit to read. Having enough engaging books for fifth grade informational reading is key for them to not only enjoy but also grow as a readers. We've begun that journey, but it's a big project.

STEM-related books will explain to my kids all about how their world works, teach them about important people who have already worked to explore and change it, and inspire them to discover and create in the future.

These books, from biographies of lesser-known scientists to hilariously gross explainers of the human body to books about robotics, will change our library for these kids. In turn, these new ideas will open doors and opportunities for them.
