I teach first grade in Coldwater, Michigan. This is my 6th year year and my 15th year teaching. I have a very diverse class. I have 13 boys and 11 girls. I have 6 Arabic students, 1 Hispanic student, and 1 Native American student.
My class loves hands-on learning and investigating.
Daily we have 4 literacy work stations which are Work on Writing, Word Work, Read to Self, and either iPads or Read to Someone.
We also have 3 math stations that we do daily which are Math Writing, Math with Someone, Math by Myself and either iPads or Math with Mrs. S. I pull small groups of students during literacy and math stations. We also have Writing Workshop, science, social studies, and growth mindset and character lessons. We use STEM bins to take brain breaks during the day and they are also available during indoor recess.
My Project
These supplies will continue to enhance the hands-on learning that I strive to create. My classroom is a place that my students really enjoy-we have some STEM boxes available already. I am excited to see them use the bins I have created using materials I had in my classroom. All of these supplies have been chosen with my students in mind-I have watched them the past few weeks of school and have talked to other classroom teachers who use STEM bins.
With these new STEM supplies, my first graders will have the opportunity to grow their problem solving skills.
They will also be able to choose the bin that interests them and will create a larger variety.
