My students need engaging resources like Legos, Brain Flakes and Nuts and Jumbo Nuts Bolt toys to use for morning work tubs instead of using worksheets.
I am a teacher at a Title 1 school just outside of Waco, Texas. Our students come from all different backgrounds, all races and all ability levels. Everyone is welcome in our class, including students with disabilities, immigrants from all over the globe and English Language Learners.
It is amazing how each and every student can be successful when given the opportunity to grow and learn!
My students are dedicated, unique and kind, so it is my goal to give them every opportunity that I can to make them successful. I want to instill in them a love of learning that they can take with them when they leave my classroom.
My Project
My students work extremely hard throughout the day. However, I have noticed their lack of social and teamwork skills are affecting their relationships at school.
Using STEM bins as morning tubs will offer a safe, play-based opportunity for students to collaborate, explore, create, and communicate.
Resources such as Legos, Magna-Tiles and Interlox will teach them teamwork and engineering skills. The nuts and bolts will help improve their fine motor skills. Having access to such materials will give them the opportunity to let their creativity show by manipulating the resources to build anything they can dream up.
Having these STEM bins in the morning will help get their minds working and in the right mindset for learning. It also will be much more engaging than the typical morning work in the form of a worksheet.
