My students need supplies for STEM bins. Items ranging in complexity from magnetic blocks to toothpicks are opportunities for students to think creatively like scientists and engineers.
My students are from a small town just north of San Luis Obispo. Many come from farming communities and have a wealth of knowledge beyond the classroom. They come from miles away to attend school every day.
Our 4th and 5th grade class is full of diverse learners who bring so much to our classroom.
Being a small school, it is a close community of staff, teachers, students, and families. Our school is a unique learning environment full of unique individuals who are ready to learn.
My Project
These STEM Bins will each have one or two resources each with rotating goals throughout the year. Items such as magnetic blocks, Jenga Blocks, and even Play Doh will be the tools in which these engineers will have to complete a challenge.
STEM Bins will provide students frequent access to an Engineering Design Challenges.
While the materials are simple, the opportunities are endless. The challenge comes when faced with a task given the set material. Students have to think outside the box and become creative problem solvers. We follow the Engineering Design Process: Ask, Imagine, Plan, Create, Improve. The curriculum with these materials has this process imbedded throughout the tasks to keep use of the materials focused while the students are having fun and learning.
