Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach first grade at a Title I elementary school where 84% of the students receive free or reduced lunch. Unfortunately, many of these students were heavily impacted by Hurricane Harvey. At this time, I have a total of twenty-three amazing and very diverse group of students, six of them are ESL (English as a Second Language), eleven are considered At Risk for Failure, one Special Education student, and five very enthusiastic learners.
While most of them come to school eager to learn, there are always the handful where school is hard for them and, therefore, do not enjoy learning.
A majority of my students are considered at the low socioeconomic status. Our mission in our school district is to provide rigorous, relevant learning, and life experiences so that all students contribute positively to society. Teaching is my passion, and my goal is to have a classroom of students who want to come to school everyday and give 100%.
My students know they are to give 100% everyday. It would be amazing to get some higher level questioning materials to help my students get to the next level.
My Project
I feel that providing my students with a variety of STEM activities to use on a daily basis will ensure they become more interested in all aspects of learning. These hands-on activities will provide my students with a different type of learning than they are used to. It will allow them to be creative first thing in the morning, during breaks, and when we have to have indoor recess.
While I do have a few different STEM activities I have purchased for the classroom myself, this project will allow a wide variety of materials my students would not otherwise be able to experience.
The building blocks, marble run construction, scientific explorer, and ZOOB Builderz STEM challenge, will attract both boys and girls alike. I want to entice my students to push themselves beyond what they think they are capable of doing. Providing my students with the chance to work with a diverse range of materials will show them that there is more than one way to create something, this showing them that there is more than one way to solve a problem and to open up there minds to become more creative writers.
