"I regard theatre as the greatest of all art forms, the immediate way in which a human beings can share with another the sense of what it is to be a human being."-Thorton Wilder. Our students have a rigorous curriculum that includes AP Level courses in middle school, robotics, engineering, advanced mathematics, research lab and more. This year, I have been given the opportunity to start a Theatre program. We are starting brand new, with close to no supplies. Other than art and film, my class is the only emotionally creative outlet most of these students experience. In their formative years, students need to learn skills such as sympathy, problem solving, and emotional expression. I give my students true to life material to allow for a world view and broad connection to be made.
We talk about success, and I encourage my students to "fail brilliantly" no, you will not be good at everything you do the first time, but I teach them that it is most important that you try.
I teach life skills through stage skills. I allow students to make brave, bold choices without judgement.
My Project
My students study applied design when looking at set and lighting design. In order to fully explore the math, and science in the arts my students need Architect scale rulers and different colored pencils or other art supplies to add details to their designs. Students will learn the difference between 1", 1/2", and 1/4" scales
Students will take their learning into their own hands and calculate, draw, and investigate different angles and scales and how that changes their set or costuming design.
We will use the art supplies in the S&S Color Splash Art pack to change and manipulate our designs not only for class, but for the use in school theatrical productions as well. I am trying to show my students that it is easy to take STEM to STEAM!
