My students need wireless communication devices to communicate between student stage hands/technicians during performances and assemblies. All the technical elements of our assemblies and theatrical productions are designed and run directly by the students.
Students at our small school have big dreams and even bigger hearts. They are unique, talented, and incredibly gifted. Our school draws from a community of driven, hardworking families who value all aspects of their education: from math to the arts.
Our students LOVE the arts, and our Theatre program involves over 25% of our school population each year; even with our limited facilities the students work hard and get a chance to shine on stage.
Our theatre program is student focused and student run. We integrate STEM and other cross-curricular teaching methods to give students real-world applications of the skills they acquire in class.
At our school, students are encouraged to follow their interests and express their knowledge. I work hard every day to help my students learn who they are and what they love to do so they can go out into the world and make it a better place. My class motto is always "Go big or go home, and you can't go home so you might as well go big!"
My Project
These wireless headsets will be used exclusively by our technical theatre students to facilitate communication between them during school plays, concerts, assemblies, etc. Currently the students have no way to effectively communicate between stage hands back stage and the sound/light board operators on the other side of the auditorium. These headsets will allow the students to apply their STEM skills the way the professionals do in a real-world setting.
Our Technical Theatre program fully integrates STEM content and Theatre using real-world applications.
All our sets are built and designed by students. All our technical elements are fully operated by students. The sound equipment for assemblies are set-up and run by students. When there is an engineering roadblock with the set, they use their math and science skills to solve it. When there is microphone feedback, the students use their knowledge of electricity and sound waves to balance it out. I try and give them a real-world, hands on venue to use their STEM skills acquired in their other classes.
At our school the theatre program is a huge part of our campus culture. As a teacher I have a saying: "We don't talk about theatre, we DO theatre." I design all my classes and my after-school programs to be completely hands on for the students. These headsets will prove invaluable in helping students take on the real-world role of Theatre Technician and help them better implement their STEM skills.
