Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My district is a low income school district. The majority of our students are students of color. Our school is close to Chicago, but students often miss the many opportunities available so close to them. The amount of exposure they get to different types of activities is crucial. Bringing in opportunities, experiences and new activities can really impact the school environment.
My goal is to help round out my students' educational experience with access to the arts through a variety of mediums.
Our school music program has been growing since I have started in the district. We have moved to an elective based program that allows students to chose from guitar, piano, and choir. Students chose these classes and are provided with an experience that differs from their regular middle school course load!
My Project
I am looking to align our music curriculum and extra curricular opportunities to build in STEM opportunities through the fine arts. Through a new extracurricular club, I am allowing students to come and work on their own musical ideas on a variety of musical ideas. The end goal is for the students to perfect a piece of music, record it and then edit the music for a final digitally recorded product.
I am asking for 2 microphones and a MIDI capable keyboard to help give students the tools needed to turn the music classroom into their own recording studio.
Allowing the opportunity to record gives students the opportunity to express themselves creatively and also teaches them about the real world technology tools used in the music production business. As we look to expand our curriculum into the 21st century, it is crucial we provide these opportunities for music through digital and recording possibilities.
