My students need STEM and STEAM materials to enhance learning in the classroom. Materials include a Butterfly Classroom Kit, Gel Ant Farm, Mystery Capsules that allow my students hypothesis what they are touching, feeling and listening.
As quoted by Jean Jacques Rosseau, "We should not teach children the science but give them a taste for them." Science is all around us and we interact with it every day without realizing it! Science gives students the opportunity to be active in problem-solving opportunities through experiments.
I teach with a second grade team, in Northern Illinois, where each of our students are unique and have individual qualities.
They are intrigued by new challenges, but face challenges themselves. Within our classrooms, we have special education students who are mainstreamed into the regular classroom, along with English Language Learners. Our goal is to learn something every day!
My Project
Science is all around us. Being able to gain knowledge first-hand by observing up close is priceless. Our second grade students will get the opportunity to observe what is happening beneath our feet by watching ants in a gel farm. Additionally, they will have the opportunity to observe butterflies.
Using our Science Journals, they will have the ability to comprehend what is being introduced.
Sound and touch are things we do every day. Utilizing the sounds, feel and touch capsules, students will be able to hypothesis using the scientific method and their senses. Furthermore, they will be able to create art such as a life cycle mobile, and reflect what is occurring, improving their writing skills. Research has shown being activate in the learning process will increase the opportunity of new experiences and comprehending what is being taught in the classroom and the world around them.
