My inner-city students come from various backgrounds where English is not always their native language. We are a Title I school where our students receive one hundred percent free breakfast and lunch. The children in my class come to school wanting to learn and work hard because school is a safe place for them. It is also one of their most favorite places to be. My students are eager readers who love to learn and be exposed to interesting topics. They are dreamers, thinkers, talkers, and questioners. They are an inspiration to me and others around them every single day.
My Project
Our school is a K-5 Real World Math STEM School. I try to integrate STEM into all my classes. But it can often be difficult to integrate STEM and Language Arts. I have found some ways to do it in our curriculum but this book would help so much! Story Design is an exciting student-driven, high-engagement interdisciplinary program that combines STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) with English Language Arts. The Story Design approach is an example of problem-based learning or PBL. This is a student-focused approach in which students learn by solving an open-ended problem using procedures they devise. PBL reflects how real people encounter, identify, evaluate, investigate, refine, and solve problems. In addition, students work in teams and practice 21st-century skills such as collaboration, critical thinking, and creativity. This is exactly what my class needs and would be such an amazing addition to our curriculum.
