I teach 1st grade in a small, rural community. We are made up of students that come to us from three communities. We are a Title I school with all students receiving free breakfast and lunch.
My classroom is full of students that are eager to learn and capable of being challenged.
As students enter the room each morning, they are eager to learn. However, some students need a little more time to awaken their minds and get their brains working and focusing on the day ahead. We ask much of these little ones. Getting them off to the right start each day is vital. Beginning the day with STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) tubs will engage students right away with hands-on, relevant learning experiences.
My Project
My 1st grade students will begin each day with a STEM activity tub. These tubs will be hands-on activities that are fun yet educational. Magnetic gears, kinetic sand, tinker toys, etch-a-sketch, and Osmo activities for iP{ads are the types of activities that will be included in their STEM tubs. They will encourage problem solving, building, creating and critical thinking skills.
The various tubs will encourage students to use their imagination and give them the opportunity to find an activity that fits their personality and learning style.
Students will work on their own or with classmates. This will encourage communication and cooperation, essential skills for all young learners. STEM envelops many parts of the world around us. Introducing these activities at an early age is a necessary part of every classroom.
