This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach at a Title I school in Richmond, Virginia. All the students in my school are considered economically disadvantaged and receive free breakfast and lunch. Over 30% of the students receive a backpack of food to sustain them through the weekend. The neighborhood which my school serves experiences many challenges which include poverty, and violence just to name a few.
In spite of the challenges faced on a daily basis, my students view my classroom as a safe haven and are always eager and ready to learn.
It is always a joy to see the way their faces light up when they get the opportunity to be actively engaged in a lesson.
My students have a love for learning that is commendable and should be encouraged.
My Project
The materials selected will benefit my students in so many ways. Magna-Tiles can assist my students to develop problem-solving skills, and help those struggling with sensory issues, attention, and focus. Our science unit could be enhanced by providing more hands-on materials like STEM challenge Kits. The Design and Play Steam cars will take students through the entire engineering process and enhance their critical thinking skills.
My students are so creative and I want to ensure that they are constantly being encouraged to be innovative.
I also want to ensure that the next generation of engineers are provided with the tools they need to ensure a bright future.
Our school encourages a strong STEAM focus in the classroom, but despite our best efforts, the constraint in our budget makes it extremely difficult to provide students with the materials necessary for their success.
